Inca calendar and time reckoning
The Inca calendar was a sophisticated system of time reckoning that combined a solar year of twelve months, a ritual cycle of state festivals, careful observation of the moon and the Pleiades, and a complex horizon-based astronomy tied to a network of sacred shrines called huacas. Like most pre-industrial Andean peoples, the Incas had no alphabetic writing; instead, time was marked by the annual position of the sun on the horizon, by stone pillars (intiwatana) calibrated to the solstices and equinoxes, and by oral memory of festival dates. The system was used to schedule agricultural work, to organize religious ceremonies in Cusco and across the empire, and to fix the dates of state labor drafts and military campaigns. The calendar was a state instrument, managed by specialists in the Inca court, and it was one of the most important institutional inheritances of the Tiwanaku and Wari civilizations that had preceded the Inca rise.
The Inca calendar was not a single uniform system. It combined several overlapping cycles, and different communities used different conventions depending on altitude, ecological zone, and ritual tradition. The version preserved in colonial sources, especially in the work of Bernabé Cobo and Pedro Cieza de León, is the imperial Inca calendar as practiced in and around Cusco. Local calendars elsewhere in the empire kept older features that often survive today in Andean ritual practice.
The Solar Year and the Twelve Months
The Inca solar year was divided into twelve months of varying length, each beginning with a major festival. Colonial chroniclers disagree on the exact lengths of the months, but the basic structure is consistent: the year began in June with the winter solstice and ended in May, after which a short uncounted period of five to fifteen days (Hatum Rumi) was inserted before the new year. The principal months, recorded in the work of the chronicler Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala in his Nueva corónica y buen gobierno (c. 1615), included:
- Qhapaq Raymi (June): the winter solstice and the great festival of Inti Raymi, the Sun.
- Huchuy Cusqui (July): the small marriage festival.
- Chahuar Huarquiz (August): the ritual plowing of the first fields.
- Yapaquis (September): a festival of irrigation cleansing.
- Coya Raymi (October): the festival of the queen and of the moon.
- Antisuyu or Uma Raymi (November): a harvest festival of the eastern suyu.
- Aya Marcay or Qhapaq Inti Raymi (December): the summer solstice and the great drinking festival.
- Camay (January): a month of purification.
- Hatun Pucuy (February): the ripening of maize.
- Pachapucuy (March): the ripening of the earth.
- Aymuray (April): the harvest of ch’uño (freeze-dried potato).
- Hatun Kuski (May): the large marriage festival closing the agricultural year before the solstice.
This twelve-month sequence is the calendar most often reproduced in scholarly and popular accounts. In practice, the months were not counted as a continuous numerical sequence but as a series of named ritual occasions interspersed with named agricultural activities. The month names, in most cases, refer to the ceremonies with which they begin rather than to the length of time between them.
The Moon, the Pleiades, and Stellar Observations
Alongside the solar year, the Incas observed a lunar calendar based on the synodic month of about 29.5 days. The moon, called Mama Killa (“Mother Moon”), was the sister and consort of the Sun and a major figure of state religion. The lunar calendar was used to fix the dates of monthly rituals and to regulate the timing of agricultural work, especially in the highland zones where crops were sensitive to the waxing and waning of moonlight. A field planted during the new moon, in the Inca view, would sprout with the moon; a field planted during the full moon would not keep.
The Pleiades (Qhollqa in Quechua) were the most important stellar marker of the agricultural year. The heliacal rising of the Pleiades in June, just before the winter solstice, signaled the beginning of the agricultural cycle and was associated with the storage of the harvest in the state granaries. The disappearance of the Pleiades from the night sky in May marked the approach of the dry season and the period of preparation for the new year. The Pleiades were also used as a marker of good and bad fortune: their clear appearance at the June rising was read as a sign of fertility, while a blurred or reddish appearance was read as a warning of drought or pestilence.
The Incas also tracked the planets and the Milky Way (Mayu, the “River” in the sky), and they used horizon observations to fix the dates of solstices and equinoxes. The most famous surviving instrument for this purpose is the Intiwatana (“hitching post of the Sun”) at Machu Picchu, a carved stone pillar whose corners align with the cardinal points and with the solstitial and equinoctial sunrises.
The Ceque System and the Sacred Landscape
The Incas organized the countryside around Cusco into a system of 41 ceques — radial sightlines that ran outward from the Coricancha, the Temple of the Sun, to a sequence of shrines, fountains, and tombs in the surrounding hills. The ceque system, analyzed in detail by Tom Zuidema in The Ceque System of Cusco (2002), was simultaneously a religious calendar, a map of the social order, and a record of the historical expansion of the Inca state. Each ceque was assigned to a particular panaca (royal descent group) and contained a fixed sequence of huacas that were venerated in a regular annual rotation.
The ceque system was in effect a ritual calendar spread across the landscape. As the year progressed, the panacas of Cusco and the priests of the Coricancha would move from one ceque to the next, performing ceremonies at each huaca in turn. The system encoded information about kinship, history, agricultural timing, and political geography in a way that did not require written records. The agricultural terraces, irrigation canals, and storehouses along the ceques were scheduled for use in particular months, and the entire system was used to synchronize the work of the various communities of the Cusco basin with the rhythm of the solar and lunar calendars.
Time Reckoning in a Non-Literate State
The Inca calendar was managed by a class of ritual specialists attached to the Inca court. The High Priest of the Sun (Villac Umu) was the chief religious officer of the empire and the principal keeper of the calendar. Below him were a hierarchy of priests, mamaconas (women chosen for temple service), and yanaconas (temple servants) who maintained the shrines, performed the ceremonies, and instructed the population in the correct observance of festivals. Astronomical observations were made at a series of horizon-aligned pillars and platforms, of which the most famous surviving example is the group of towers at Quiancahuasi on the horizon north of Cusco, identified by the chronicler Bernabé Cobo.
Because the Incas had no alphabetic writing, the calendar could not be “read” in the modern sense. It was, however, recorded in several non-textual ways. The most famous is the **quipu](../../../02-geography-and-administration/04-quipu-and-record-keeping/_cluster.md), the knotted-cord recording device, which encoded numerical data including census counts, tribute quotas, and calendrical calculations. Ceremonial objects — including the carved stones at the Kenko complex and the elaborate textiles of the royal panacas — encoded calendrical information in their iconography. And the ceque system itself functioned as a kind of three-dimensional calendar inscribed in the landscape around Cusco.
The Survival of Andean Time Reckoning
The Inca calendar did not disappear with the Spanish conquest. Many of its festivals and observances were incorporated into the Catholic ritual calendar by the colonial church, often displaced by a few days to coincide with the feasts of the saints. The winter solstice festival of Inti Raymi is still celebrated in Cusco each June, and the heliacal rising of the Pleiades continues to be observed by highland communities in Peru and Bolivia as a marker of the agricultural year. The survival of these practices, in syncretic form, is one of the clearest examples of the persistence of Inca institutions into the present day.
